SanDisk Security General FAQ
What is SanDisk Security?
SanDisk Security is a new, hardware-based security solution for password-protecting the new (V2) versions of the SanDisk Extreme Portable SSD line (Extreme and Extreme Pro). SanDisk Security uses AES 256-bit hardware encryption built directly into the product. This is more efficacious than the 128-bit SecureAccess previously utilized. There is an additional feature called 'Auto Unlock' which allows a user access to the drive if he or she is logged into the computer that the device is attached to. This feature does not support desktops/laptops joined to a domain. It is for local user accounts only on that same machine.
There are two components to this feature:
INSTALLER
The software installer exists on the unit as an executable file which installs the software. This is used to configure the password, password hint and erase option for the product. The file may be deleted if there is no desire to use the feature. It can be re-downloaded when needed - see below.
UNLOCKER (VCD)
The 'unlocker' is a virtual CD (VCD) that is hard-coded (non-removable) into the product and contains the technology necessary for security and encrypting the drive. While the writeable or data area of the drive can be reformatted, the VCD cannot be. There is a feature request in place to potentially have that be an option in a future release of the product, however, there is no ETA or timeframe if or when this may happen. Please check back periodically for updates.
